HDMI: Perhaps the most important feature to look for in recent
times is HDMI compatibility. HDMI is the only way to transmit copy
protected high definition audio & video signals. Be cautious
when choosing equipment though, there is a multitude of different
specifications & features for HDMI & choosing inappropriate
equipment can mean you do not benefit from the improved audio video
performance offered. We wil cover variations in the HDMI standard
later in our guide to HDMI connections.
Made for
iPod: With iPod being such a huge success, it is
difficult to find an audio product without iPod support. Whether
via a dock, an umbilical cable or a USB lead, most AV amplifiers have
some support for iPod. However, with apple continuously
developing & changing the iPod you may be dissappointed with the
results. What will work is the audio with remote control & on
screen track selection, what may not work is on screen photo &
video output & battery charging. for this reason we allways
recommend you bring your iPod in to check compatibility before
purchasing.
USB: With USB storage becoming ever cheaper, it is fast
becoming the product of convenience for file storage. Many
Audio-Visual components across the board are now offering USB
features. Televisions will support photo playback, amplifiers
support audio playback & DVD / BluRay players support photo, audio
& video playback. If you are looking for an iPod connection then be
cautious, iPods have their data files hidden & will not work via
USB unles specifically stated on the host product.
DLNA & Networking: With home networking being increasingly common, many
upmarket products are starting to feature network receivers. The
easiest & most recent standard to look for is DLNA. DLNA
products can be connected to Windows Media Player 11 or higher without
any extra software & will stream audio, photo & video data from
you PC along with Internet radio via Broadband.
